From Monday, 16 December 2019, the Tjongerschans hospital in Heerenveen will be the first hospital in the Netherlands to offer mothers a new possibility of accessing the medical file (HiX) of their child using their own DigiD.

Parents can acquire a lot of medical information during an appointment with their sick child's attending physician (or another health care professional). Often they want to review this information at their own pace at home. HiX contains all information about the treatment of a patient, such as examination results, x-rays or (referral) letters to a specialist or general practitioner.

Access to the medical file of a child is currently only possible with an authorization process from the hospital itself. This is done on paper or via a complex digital route, or parents just use the DigiD of their minor child. With the new authorisation provision, the mother can log in to the patient portal of her child with her own DigiD, without the intervention of the hospital. A check takes place via the new functionality to which the health care entity is connected. If she is authorised, she will receive access to her child's file.

It is important for a health care entity to know who is logging in and that the parent actually has custody of the child. The pilot will start with a group of mothers of children under 12 years of age. If the first experiences are positive, there may be testing with fathers and guardians at a later stage.

The pilot "Parental authority in health care" was created form a cooperation between the ministries of Internal Affairs and Kingdom Relations (BZK), Economic Affairs and Climate (EZK) and Public Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS), Nictiz, the Tjongerschans hospital and ChipSoft.
